What This Mod Is About

Eastern Sun is one of the most popular and extensively developed mods for Diablo II. It adds new skills, monsters, dungeons, items, runewords, cuberecipies, bosses and more, while at the same time keeping all the original items and skills in the game.

General Information

Eastern Sun increased all monsters’ level, life, defense, damage, attack rating and experience granted. Monsters are re-allocated and new monsters were added, including Black Knight, Goatman Lord, Beholder, Succubus from Diablo I, King Leoric, Belhifeit, Cyclops and others. The max character level is 100.

Acts 2, 3 and 5 maps have been altered. Two of the new/changed areas are the Lost Farm where literally hundreds of ghost cows will try to kick the moo out of you, and the Marsh of Pain where there is not one, not two, but many Duriels waiting to pounce on you, they are also quick.

All characters have revamped and new skills. Also, thanks to PlugY, you have access to a nearly endless shared stash plus you are able to re-allocate your skill points. Stat point re-allocation is disabled in-game, but is possible through an external program included in the Eastern Sun folder.

One of the mod’s main features is the enormous amount of customization you can add to items using the Horadric Cube and “things” you will find along the way. Many new collectibles have been added to enhance your equipment, such as ancient deciphers, hearts, souls, steaks, quills, crystals and the all-important Dragon Stones (D-stones for short). Save everything as it will have its uses, there are even stockers to store them.

  • PlugY for the shared stash, skill/stat point reallocation, etc.

  • D2Mod system GemFix plugin to fix the gem stats descriptions.
  • Cow Level Waypoint Plugin. Jail WP is replaced by Cow Level WP.
  • Increased the maximum character level to 100.
  • Expanded inventory (11×9), stash (10×10) and Horadric Cube (10×8).
  • Doubled the amount of gold in inventory, octupled in stash.
  • Increased the resistance penalty in NM (-60%) and in Hell (-150%).
  • Tweaked the stats, stats increment, run/walk speed, etc. of all classes.
  • Characters start with the Horadric Cube and new starting gears.
  • Some maps of Act 2, Act 3 and Act 5 are altered.
  • Some areas are renewed and filled with strong monsters for über players.
  • Amazon’s slow block with 1H swing weapons, Paladins slow recovery with some 2H weapons and Druids slow recovery with some 1H weapons are fixed.
  • Made the animation speed of most weapons closer. Some weapons are still faster and some classes are still better at some weapons, but now there is little difference.

Items

There are set, rune and coupon jackpots in which upon killing a unique monster you can get a full set in one dropping or multiple runes or coupons. Getting all pieces of a set is very possible thanks to Eastern Sun’s focus on smaller group play. In fact you will most likely get multiple full sets for all characters. Ancient Scrolls unlock secret recipes for the Horadric Cube which will allow you to do many new and interesting things including re-roll items, add sockets to items even — rings, amulets and charms! — as well as many other things. Obtaining three of the same Ancient Coupon and cubing them will get you a LoD unique item of same base with at least one socket. Many new base items have been added as well, including brass knuckles and battering arms (it really is an arm), katanas for Assassins, ritualistic daggers for Necromancers, mana blades for Sorceress’, throwing axes for Barbarians, new circlets called Hachigane as well as other headgear, various types of elven chainmail and cloaks for Assassins and Sorceress’ just to name a few.

There are new runes (46 new runes based on Japanese Hiragana and 14 new runes based on Kanji (Japanese characters using Chinese script also known as Han characters)) and runewords, but you can still use the LoD runes (called decals in Eastern Sun) if you prefer some of the LoD runewords. Kanji runes being more powerful and much harder to come by are made by combining crystals and a null rune. There are 222 new runewords besides all the LoD runewords. The runes can also be removed and reloaded with ease (without losing the runes themselves) to get closer-to-perfect/perfect stats with use of the Horadric Cube.

There is a new gem, obsidian, and blemished grade has been added. Gems have been given multiple and much improved stats. You can now make gemwords now as well, there are 21 gemwords. E.g. Socketing amethysts into gloves, weapons, arrows or bolts (gemword Mighty) will give you a 2-18% CTC level 1-18 Amplify Damage on striking (chance and level depends on number and grade of gems) along with a few other abilities. You can now buy gems at the vendors and are also easily removed by using the Cube.

  • A new gem type: Obsidian.
  • A new gem grade: Blemished (between Flawless and Perfect).
  • All gems have multiple and much improved stats.

  • All base items are rebalanced and improved. All elite items are renamed.

  • Body Armor can be spawned with 1-6 sockets.
  • Rings, Amulets, some Charms and some Quivers can have a socket by the cube recipes.
  • You can pull out the socketed gems/runes/jewels without destroying them by cubing with a key.
  • Many recipes like D-Stoning, Forging, Gem Melding and Tinkering to enhance items in various ways (skill bonus, ED, leech, max hp/mana, aura, etc.).
  • Recipes to reroll various items (ex. 7 magic rings -> a rare ring).
  • Recipes to make Unique Items and Set Items (for normal and exceptional items).

  • Magic, rare and unique quivers are spawnable.

  • A special normal charm with 1-3 sockets is cubable.
  • All Gemwords and some Runewords work for quivers and the special charm.
  • Carrying multiple Unique Charms of the same kind reduces character’s life to 1.
  • Equipping any piece of Mercenary Sets reduces character’s life to 1.
  • You can remove unwanted RIP and Freeze from an item.
  • You can cube a negative MF charm to find more normal items.
  • The buying price of NPC is halved, but the cap is raised.

New Items

  • Ancient Scrolls 1-50: Let you use the secret cube recipes.
  • Ancient Decipherers: Cube with an Ancient Scroll to identify.
  • Dragon Stones: Used in cube recipes. Transmutable into other forms cyclically.
  • Ancient Coupons: 3 Coupons make a LoD unique with an extra socket (or +1 All Skill bonus for jewelry), which never drops in ES.
  • Ancient Decals: Transmute an ES rune to a LoD rune, which never drops in ES.
  • Monster’s Organs: Used for Tinkering and some other recipes.
  • Gem Can and other Stockers: Saves the storage space mainly for Mac users.
  • Tokenizer: Tokenize any weapons and armor to save the storage space.

D-Stoning (Item Enhancements)

In Eastern Sun there are many ways to increase the effectiveness of your items in your quest to defeat Baal and the monsters lurking in the Domain. One method that is heavily used is D-Stoning.

What are D-Stones
D-Stones are items that can drop from any monster in the mod. These items are highly treasured by Eastern Sun players since they are key ingredients used in many recipes including the method to enhance your items capabilities. D-Stones can be changed to other forms of stones by right clicking on it in the inventory. The other stones are Blackmoor, Crushed Gem, Forging Hammer, Holy Symbol, Spiders Silk, and Tyranium Ore.

What is D-Stoning
D-Stoning is the name of the process that we use to enhance our items in particular our end gear for the difficult challenges we will face in Hell. Veteran Eastern Sun players will likely hold off on using these valuable stones until they have found their end gear. Since once a D-Stone is used in a D-Stoning operation the D-Stone can never be returned if you no longer want to use the item. In the process of D-Stoning the item will add or increase a property on an item but at a cost of adding an increase to the level requirement on the item. The level increase will depend on the item it is used on. There is a secret recipe that will reduce the required level requirement by 1 or 2 levels depending on the item it is used on. This secret recipe is very expensive and we will discuss this recipe further on in the guide. D-Stoning can be done to almost any item. The only items it can not be used on are charms, jewels, arrows/crossbow bolts.

Important Notes

  • Most D-Stoning enhancements can be removed with an item called a Magic Eraser which can be bought at Charsi’s in Act 1. It is not recommended to do so since the required level of the item will not be reduced. You may want to use this recipe if you accidentally used the wrong ingredient with the D-Stone in the D-Stoning process or if you have too many mods on an item. Having too many mods on an item will start to make lines on the item disappear or the lines getting smaller. When you start seeing this it is time to not add anymore new enhancements. If you no longer see any lines on an item you may start to crash and get error messages. Sometimes you may not be able to load that character since the item is corrupt.
  • D-Stoning enhancements made to a runeword/gemword are lost if you remove the runes/gems from the item using a key in the cube. The enhancements are lost due to the fact that when the runeword/gemword is created the game actually makes a new item. When the runes/gems are removed the runeword/gemword is deleted in the process and reverts back to the old item.
  • D-Stoning will not work if the item has reached a cap on a property. The caps on a property will be listed with the recipes for the D-Stoning process.
  • D-Stoning process will not work if the item has a level requirement +99 for normal items or jewelry(rings/amulets)
  • D-Stoning process will not work if the item has a level requirement +79 for exceptional items
  • D-Stoning process will not work if the item has a level requirement +58 for elite items
  • Be careful when using this process since you may do one too many enhancements and can not use the item anymore unitl you either gain more level(s) or use the secret scroll recipe #50 to lower the level requirement.

Gambling

Gambling is greatly improved. There is a 30% chance for rares, 5% chance for sets and 5% chance for uniques from gambling and buying chits. You can even set the gambling filter to display only items you are looking for. Gold is actually important here.

  • 30% chance for Rares, 5% chance for Sets and 5% chance for Uniques.
  • Greatly reduced the gamble cost of expensive items (heavy armor, etc.).
  • Greatly increased the chance for Exceptionals and Elites.
  • Larzuk and Anya sell Gambling Chits, which can be cubed to make an item just like gambling. Buying Gambling Chits are sometimes more economical than the real gambling, because of the fixed price and the fixed chance to be upper.

Hirelings

In LoD Act 2 mercs are the most preferred. In Eastern Sun the mercs are all well balanced and is recommended that you try out different ones to see the difference for yourself. Mercs use more various skills, including Battle Orders, Fanaticism and Conviction, have good support skills and are almost equally useful. They level much faster and the status of mercs aren’t affected by the difficulty they are hired in. They can be equipped with full gear now including gloves, belt, boots, rings and an amulet. They also have their own mercenary only sets to wear as well that grants them extra abilities and bonuses, however you can also equip them with regular equipment that your character uses.

  • Hirelings can equip gloves, a belt, boots, rings and an amulet.
  • Hirelings use more skills, including BO, Fanaticism and Conviction.
  • All hirelings have good support skills and are almost equally useful.
  • Hirelings level much faster.
  • The status of hirelings isn’t affected by the difficulty they are hired.

Quest Rewards

  • Hellforge quest drops better runes. Up to r28 (Norm), r35 (NM), r42 (Hell).
  • Qual-Kehk gives a kit of materials for Class Craft for rescuing his men.
  • Anya gives a Unique Stone that can make a Unique Item and many D-Stones for rescuing her.

Monsters (General)

  • Increased all monsters’ level, life, defense, damage, AR and experience.
  • Monsters are reallocated and new monsters are added, including Black Knight, Goatman Lord, Beholder, D1 Succubus, King Leoric, Belhifeit and Cyclops.
  • Monsters no longer cast Iron Maiden.
  • Changed some demons and undead into animals.
  • Increased Magic Immune monsters in Hell.
  • FE monster’s death explosion damage is generally reduced.
  • Act Bosses aren’t spawned with multiple shot, to avoid the heavy graphic lag.
  • Act Bosses, Ancient Barbs and Lister aren’t spawned with FE.
  • Diablo Clone can be spawned in single and TCP/IP games.
  • Zakarum Zealots never flee even after you smash the Compelling Orb.

Monsters (Drop)

  • All drops, especially the drop of high runes, are improved.
  • The first kill drop of Act Bosses is much improved.
  • The panther woman nearby the Horadric Cube chest (in Halls of the Dead Level 2) can drop a Forging Hammer. HoD run is a popular way to collect D-Stones. (50% chance in Normal, 75% chance in NM and 100% chance in Hell)
  • The Ancient Barbarians at the Arreat Summit drop a Decipherer. (20% chance in Normal, 40% chance in NM and 60% chance in Hell)
  • Countess drops better runes. Up to r12 (Norm), r27 (NM), r42 (Hell).
  • Izual has a slightly increased chance to drop Ancient Scrolls.
  • Belhifets and Cyclops have a slightly increased chance to drop Runes.
  • Sand Raiders and its family have a slightly increased chance to drop Coupons.
  • Unique monsters have a slim chance to drop all pieces of a set. (Set Jackpot)
  • Unique monsters have a slim chance to drop a bunch of Runes. (Rune Jackpot)
  • Unique monsters have a slim chance to drop a bunch of Coupons. (Coupon Jackpot)
  • Increased the amount of dropped gold and reduced the drop rate.
  • Reduced the chance of annoying junks (pots, quivers, etc.) to drop.
  • Diablo Clone drops a Magic, Rare or Unique Charm, or a Maple Leaf.

Skills

General

  • Improved and modified most skills. 5 additional skills for each class.
  • Improved skill descriptions. Many hidden skill effects are now displayed.
  • Some utility skills like warcries and teleport are castable in town.

Amazon Skills

  • Inner Sight reduces target’s defense and physical resistance by a percentage.
  • Multiple Shot triggers CtC effects more often. (trigger arrows 2 -> 3)
  • Fend attacks much faster.
  • Fend, Fire Strike, Viper Bite, Shadow Strike, Lightning Strike and Dance of Death can be used with any melee weapon.
  • Jab can be used with any thrust weapon.
  • Javelin skills can be used with any throwing weapon.
  • D/A/E also gives some defense bonus.
  • D/A/E works 8 times faster with 2H melee weapons and 2 times faster with 1H weapons.

  • Holy Auras’ elemental melee damage is boosted only once by Elemental Mastery.

Changed the General Passive skill of the DA to use the “generalpassive” state instead of the “2hmeleepassive” state. I’m not sure if this is only a display problem or not, but AFAIK you can’t have two skills with the same state active at the same time, so it could be an actual problem. (Issue with FHR/Def added from 2H Passive vs. boni from DA).

Installation

I suggest using the Modplugin versions with D2SE Mod Manager for either the Official or Unofficial versions. Because D2SE is really the ultimate solution for running Diablo 2 mods. You can download them from the D2SE Mod Manager page: D2SE Mod Manager

But if you want to use 1.12a patch features and MultiRes use the installer for 1.12a. Instructions are below:

Eastern Sun for Diablo II v1.12a: Installer + Instructions

  • Install Diablo II + LoD from CD or use the digital download from Battle.net.
  • If you installed from CD, Patch to 1.12a.
  • Download and run the Eastern Sun Installer from the ES Database.
  • Download and run the Automatic ES 1.12a installer below in the Downloads section.
  • The installer includes the latest 1.12a mod files, PlugY 10.0, Multires mod and itemratios.txt, as well as modified and corrected .INI files.
  • It will modify your Eastern Sun install to work with Diablo II v1.12 (not 1.10, 1.11 or 1.13) with minimal user-input.
  • On Windows Vista/7 with UAC enabled you will need to accept an elevation prompt while installing PlugY v10.0, and all users will need to make a slight modification to the shortcut that is placed on the desktop.

Two things to note when using the Eastern Sun 1.12 mod (both Installer & Manual):

  • Do NOT use the Eastern Sun launcher to play the game. The launcher is for the original 1.10 version of the mod only.
  • If you run into problems with characters and/or online play, open up .\Diablo II\es300r\loader.ini and add a semicolon to savesize.dll:

Eastern Sun 1.12 Mini-FAQ:

Will this work with newer versions of Eastern Sun like the Unofficial/Community updates?
Yes, it should. As long as the updates don’t modify the DLLs (rare) it will be compatible.

Will I still need the CD to play?
It depends. If you can play Diablo II without it, you will be able to play Eastern Sun without it.

Will this work with the version of Diablo II downloaded from Blizzards Battle.net store?
Perfectly.

Are Eastern Sun 1.10 saves compatible with the 1.12 mod?
Yes, you can bring your characters over without any problems.

Can I play with people using Eastern Sun 1.10 if I’m on ES 1.12?
No, you cannot. You must use the same version of Diablo II, Eastern Sun and PlugY

In multiplayer I get an error like “failed to Join game”
Try using the Stash Switcher to switch to a new stash for online play
